CLEANER FUEL AND OILS

Read below to learn more about the ability of Caterpillar engines to meet Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB for cleaner fuel and oil.
Cleaner Fuel and Oils
ULTRA LOW SULFUR DIESEL FUEL REQUIRED IN TIER 4 ENGINES

Also part of the upcoming emissions standards, industry technology requires <15 parts per million (mg/kg) Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel Fuel (ULSD) for use in Tier 4 Interim engines.

In Cat engines, not only will ULSD need to be used, but also low sulfated ash oils. These cleaner fuels and oils will help reduce ash and maintain service intervals, contributing to low emissions and reduced operating costs.

Tier 4 Interim Cat engines will also have B20 biodiesel capability, adding even greater sustainability where desired or required.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TIER 4 FUEL AND OIL ISSUES

Q: How will fuel economy compare from Tier 3/Stage IIIA to Tier 4/Stage IIIB?
A: In general, Cat Tier 4 engines will have improved fuel consumption over our current Tier 3 engines. Fuel consumption could be up to 5% better, depending on application and load factor.

Q: What fuel restrictions do your products have?
A: Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB products will require Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) fuel containing a maximum of 15 ppm sulfur as opposed to current LSD (Low Sulfur Diesel) which contains 500 ppm sulfur maximum. ULSD by law must be widely available in the United States by June 2010. (Reference SEBU 6251-12 Caterpillar Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations.) In the EU and Japan, ULSD will be at 10 ppm sulfur levels and is either already available or expected to be by the time the regulations go into effect in those jurisdictions.

Q: Are there any oil restrictions for T4 Interim / Stage IIIB products?
A: Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB products will require new oil formulations to support the new technology. Stowers and other dealers will provide Cat diesel engine oil (DEO) with the appropriate formulation for Tier 4 Interim / Stage IIIB products. These new oils are expected to be commercially available as well.
